One Shot Edit - Again!

Having gathered feedback from a number of people, 3 of them suggested adding a title to my film, allowing the audience to be aware of what the film is about. Yesterday I created a final edit, with an added title. Enjoy!

Interactive Space - The Completion!

Last Thursday I completed my Interactive Space project. I found this task really simple which was disappointing but good at the same time. I am hoping to go into this pathway in second year, so I was hoping for more of a challenge! However I was pleased this was the last project because it was less time consuming.
Having mapped out the pages and knowing which pages linked to which, I edited the images taken in Photoshop (as shown below). To edit these, I altered the colour to black & white, and also added a speech bubble and text to selected images. Finally, with the use of Dreamweaver, I added hotspots to the images and linked them together.

During this project I learned a number of things. Firstly I learned that planning is an important aspect, before creation. Planning the project helped me identify where the pages linked to. Additionally, I learned not to leave the 'taking photographs' until the last minute, incase they do not turn out as planned! In future projects, I will plan my time affectively.

If I had the opportunity to repeat this project, I would most likely change my idea altogether. I found myself under pressure during the last few weeks with my own one-shot edit, Context 1 assignment and finding a good story line for Interactive Space. Having extra time to produce this project may have helped. However on a whole, I enjoyed this project.

Interactive Space - The Idea!

Idea: The story behind this project is of a girl who is entering the Waverly building but can't find her card. It is the user's job to find the card by clicking different areas on different images.

Inspiration: The idea for this project came to me last Friday. I was entering the Waverly building and couldn't find my student card to get in. I then thought this would be a good idea for the Interactive Space project. Over the weekend, I put together a plan (as shown above. Click on the image to enlarge) and today I took the pictures to create the story.

Images will be uploaded soon!

Interactive Space - First Lesson

In the first lesson for interactive space, Andrew asked us to produce 5 images which tell a story. Rachelle and I worked together for this and came up with an idea each. The inspiration for the TopShop story came to me whilst walking round town and the inspiration for the toastie came to Rachelle whilst we we having dinner!

One Shot - The Film!

Chalk Emotions

Today we completed our group edit, and I thoroughly enjoyed the process. Having used Premiere Pro before, I found it straightforward to follow. Harry was the main editor; however I was not afraid to put forward my ideas.

How we altered the video: Because the original footage lasts over 7 minutes, we increased the speed by 675% and brought it back down to 100% for the final pan. This is because we didn’t want the character to look like she’s running!

Additionally, we removed the original sound and added 2 sound tracks to portray different emotions. I believe the sounds work well in the video; however I am not keen on how one sound moves onto the other. During my edit, I will attempt to improve this area.

Below is our final group edit…

One Shot - The Filming!

The filming didn’t go quite to plan. Originally, we aimed to film on Tuesday 9th November; however it was put of because of the wet weather. Having a dry path to chalk on was a necessity. Therefore we arranged to meet the following day. Luckily it was dry!

This was not the only problem encountered. Our original plan was to have a young girl sat as shown below:

The problem here was the body blocking the drawings and the shadows from the legs casting over the drawings. Therefore we decided to have her kneeling.

A further problem we encountered was that we originally planned to have various drawings in three sections (i.e. drawings representing happy, worried and sad times); however it took a fair amount of time to sketch these on the ground. We did not want the film to last so long that the audience lose interest. Therefore we limited the drawings to one per section.

Lesson learnt: Have a back-up location to film if plans don't run accordingly! Not really having an interest in film, I can positively say I have enjoyed filming with my group. The edited film will be uploaded shortly! In the mean time, here are the production photos...

One Shot - The Planning!

To plan our One Shot film, we arranged to meet for the first time at 12:30 on Friday 5th November (yes, I’m writing this a bit late…again!). Together we put forward our ideas, which we had ALL been thinking about long and hard the night before, and although, at first, the ideas did not seem promising, we decided to base the film on Ollie’s plan.

One Shot idea:
We came to a decision that the film will show a young girl chalking her different emotions onto the ground, allowing us to convey a story without the use of speech, which is slightly unusual. To expand on this idea, we went away and created a few sketches each which the young girl could draw in the film.

The image below contains sketches (drawn by Sam), symbolising the young girl’s life, which we intend to use in the film.

We aim to divide the drawing area into three sections: Happy Times, Worried Times and Sad Times. In each section, the girl will draw relevant images, conveying her feelings (e.g. in the Happy section, she will draw things which make her feel happy, such as family, friends, Christmas, holidays etc., in the Worried section, she will draw images that represented family arguments and in the Sad section, she will draw images which show a family break-up).

Having considered the amount of time it will take to chalk out these drawings on the ground, we decided to speed the sequence up, at the editing stage, to show a time-lapse.

Inspiration:
The inspiration for this One Shot came from a documentary shown by Chris Cook in a seminar. One scene displayed a young girl drawing on the floor, which seemed to have made its mark in Ollie’s thoughts.

One Shot Film!

I haven’t really had a passion for film, but I really enjoyed filming our one-shot practice piece. I am also happy with the group I have been put into!
For the practice piece, we were required to plan, design and produce a one shot film called “You Decide!” In the seminar, we put forward our ideas, but didn’t really have a definite plan of what we were filming. So each member of the group swapped mobile numbers with one another in order to allow easy contact, and the following day we met an hour before the seminar to discuss ideas.

We decided to have a main character walking down a path in the graveyard towards the camera, and the remaining characters running away from the camera. This gives the idea that something “scary” is behind the camera, but the audience is unaware of what it is.

The main problem we encountered was that we did not have enough members to run away from the camera, for it to look effective. To solve this problem, we asked another group to join in. This made the film look better than planned!

My Station Ident

For this assignment, I was required to produce a station Ident animation, using 3ds Max, which represents me.

Prior to having begun to create the Ident, I thought about what theme it could have, in addition to what I am capable of creating on a piece of software I have not used before. I came up with a tennis theme, as I see this as a hobby, although I am not on a team.

I then carried out some research into current station Idents, in particular BBC2. I used some of their ideas and adapted them to form my own. For example, BBC2 use a 3D effect on the number two. Therefore I have used this idea, and added a Bevel effect to the text used.

(Below are my design ideas)

Also on a BBC3 Ident, a 3D figure has been made to full use, in order to maintain audience interest. I have used this idea and included a 3D object in my Ident, which is the tennis ball. To make it obvious that the object is a tennis ball, I have chosen to colour the object yellow and add the white markings.

Additionally, I chose to include a tennis court, containing the white markings. This enables it to be obvious to the audience what the theme is about and what programmes are about to follow (i.e. sports programmes). Furthermore I have made use of sound, found on the internet. Together the sound, ball and court work together to generate a meaning.

Throughout the Ident the tennis ball interacts with the text. To achieve this I created it, for example, so that the ball bounces off the ground and onto the text, forcing it down. I believe this is visually attractive and maintains audience interest because they will want to know what happens next.

TV Ident

Ok, so I haven't updated you on how my TV ident is going. I was going to do it when I returned home for the weekend, only to find out our internet was down. Let's just pretend I posted this on Thursday :)

For my ident, I am required to produce something that represents me. Although I don't play tennis on a team, I enjoy playing it when I can with my friends...for fun!

Below are some screenshots to show how it is developing.

For the text, I used a bevel effect to make it appear 3D and for the tennis ball, I followed an online tutorial. Who would've thought that you make a ball from a cube?! I also used different effects on the text such as bend, rotation and uniform scale
So far it only lasts 16 seconds, but I plan to do further work at the weekend to boost it up to 30. On Monday, I plan to edit the animation in Adobe Premiere Pro and add sound. All will be posted at the end.

3ds Max

Over the past two weeks I have been learning how to used 3ds Max. I followed a tutorial to produce moving text as shown below.

I then experimented with different effects and followed online tutorials to produce further moving text.

My Design Process

During my second year at college, I was required to produce an interactive, non-linear multimedia presentation, using Adobe Flash, which introduced the work of Isambard Kingdom Brunel. As stated by the Specification, the presentation had to be suitable for an audience of 11-15 years (Year 7-10), who will be studying his work for a history project.

To begin my ideas, I analysed two current examples of Multimedia Presentations. I gathered their advantages and disadvantages and used them to produce a more appealing presentation.

I then created a Gantt chart to plan my time effectively. I set myself various deadlines, for example: Collect images by __/__/__.

Following this, I produced two sets of hand drawn designs, each with a script. The scripts gave details of how each page will look (i.e. what images will be used and where they will be located, the fonts and colours. It also gave details of other features used, such as sound, video and animation.) I found creating two sets of designs helped me to develop my original idea. This is because whilst creating my first design, I came across various areas I could alter and improve in order to make the second design more appropriate. For example, the first design contained quite a lot of text. In order to improve this, I created the second design to contain Next buttons, where the information is spread out over several pages and not just in one scroll box.

To test the product, I created a table, as shown below (with an example of one entry):

Scene
Test No.
Element to test
Test description
Expected result
Actual result
Actions required
Introduction
1.
Sound
I will test the sound to make sure it plays.
The sound should begin to play.
The sound begins to play when the product is loaded.
No Action

I tested each feature on the product to make sure it worked correctly. If, for some reason, a feature didn’t appear as planned, I reviewed the coding in Flash and altered it.

Below are screenshots of each page created:
